Common Electrical Panel Hazards

Mister Sparky often discovers potential electrical panel hazards in older homes. Even new homes may contain wiring that contribute to unforeseen issues (like circuit breakers constantly tripping) due to faulty wiring or components.

What is considered an electrical emergency?

Telling the difference between an electrical emergency and a minor issue isn't always easy. Wiring problems can escalate into emergencies quickly.

You need someone you can trust to help you figure out what's going on. If in doubt, call us immediately for assistance in diagnosing your issue.

When should I replace or upgrade my home electrical panel?

Consider replacing your electrical box if it is more than 20 years old. Many families enjoy many eclectric devices that make for a comfortable lifestyle. While energy efficient, many families often have more electrical devices that place greater demand on a home’s wiring and electrical panel.

  • Higher power demand. Homes today have more electrical needs than in years past. Most homes have more television sets, kitchen appliances, and other electronics make life more enjoyable and require electricity. Your home’s electrical system might not be set up to handle your electricity needs.
  • Aging electrical panels. Old Panels are often outdated or may have been recalled, rendering them unsafe.
  • Fuse box systems. Decades ago, homes were built with a fuse box system. This type of electrical box has fuses that burn out when they become too hot. These fuses then need to be replaced. With circuit breakers, the breaker will flip off if it cannot handle the amount of electricity that is flowing through it, so you can usually just flip it back on.
  • Aluminum wiring. Aluminum wire is common in many older homes, and one of the biggest reasons a home may need electrical wiring and electric panel repair. Aluminum wiring was installed in many homes from the mid 1960s to the early 1970s. Although it was once considered the preferred wiring material due to its weight, conductivity and low cost, improperly installed aluminum wire can pose serious risks.

What if there's a burning smell, electric sparks, smoke, or flames?

  • When you see electrical sparks or flames, it could be an emergency. In such an event, call the fire department right away for your own safety. If you notice your outlets emitting smoke, contact a 24-hour emergency electrician.
  • Letting this problem persist could result in a house fire and thousands of dollars in damages to your home. Mister Sparky Wichita specializes in electrician services like aluminum wiring repair, electric outlet/ switch repair, and electrical panel repair. You will be in good hands with your local Mister Sparky Electrician.

I see exposed wires. What should I do?

  • Please do not use outlets or cords that have exposed wiring. If the wires are live and not insulated, you are at risk of burns, ventricular fibrillation, neurological effects, arc-flash hazards, and even death if you touch the wires.
  • Call Mister Sparky Electrician. We are a 24-hour emergency electrician, and we have the area’s most qualified electrical technicians.

What should I do when the power goes out?

Power outages can be a hassle, cutting us off from the comforts we're used to, but they're usually out of our hands.

  • Preparing for a power outage can help make the situation more manageable, keeping you comfortable even when the power's out. Luckily, in the U.S., power outages don't happen too often and are usually caused by bad weather, like heavy rain or strong winds that damage the electrical system. Some outages might be short, just a few hours, if it's something simple like a damaged power line. If there's a big problem, it could take days to regain the power.
  • Preparing ahead can make these times less stressful, letting you handle them more confidently.
  • Protect your family, home, and applicances. Call Mister Sparky for an electrical system inspection if you've experienced a power outage.

What should I do if wires and outlets have come in contact with water?

In the unfortunate event of flooding in your home or some other disaster where water gets in contact with wires and outlets, calling a 24-hour emergency electrician, like Mister Sparky, will put you at ease.

  • Obviously, the risk of electric shock is greater in areas that are wet or damp since impure water acts as a conductor.
  • We make sure to install ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) once all the water is drained and dried. Hopefully, your home won’t flood again, but if it does GFCIs will interrupt the electrical circuit before a current strong enough to cause death or serious injury occurs.

What are the strange noises coming from my electrical panel?

  • A mild humming from your breaker box is typical, as it indicates the flow of electrical current.
  • Buzzing, humming, or popping sounds may signal a problem within the breaker panel.
  • However, a continuous increase in this buzzing or humming sound could indicate an overloaded circuit breaker. This situation can dangerously heat the circuit wiring, posing a severe fire risk. Address it promptly.
